In the Office with Mallory Pinkowski
Meet Mallory Pinkowski, a dynamic project designer who has been with us for over three years, ever since graduating from Indiana University-in Bloomington with a degree in interior design.
Her passion for mid-century modern furniture led her straight to Office Interiors, a proud MillerKnoll dealer. Her projects can range wildly from a single private office to large-scale remodels requiring meticulous selection of furniture and architectural finishes. Mallory's role at Office Interiors is pivotal, which is why we are excited for you to learn more about her!
What drew you to start working with Office Interiors?
Throughout college, I was inspired by all the classic mid-century modern furniture, so working for a MillerKnoll dealer was a no-brainer. Prior to accepting my job offer, I had visited the office a few times for interviews and job shadowing, and was impressed with the culture of the company. I instantly felt welcome when I walked in.
Can you briefly describe your role and responsibilities as a Project Designer?
In a nutshell, I am responsible for meeting the clients’ needs by space planning, selecting finishes that coordinate with their vision, and using our 3D modeling program to bring these ideas to life. Some days, I am at my desk all day researching and designing; other days, I am out in the field meeting with clients or visiting installations. I work on many types of projects, varying from a single private office to entire remodels or new builds that require furniture and architectural finish selection in coordination with the contractor. I am continuously challenged in my role, and always strive to design innovative solutions that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
What inspired you to pursue a career in Interior Design?
My dad was the biggest inspiration for me to pursue a career in interior design. He has been a brick mason for over 40+ years, and throughout my childhood, he always brought my brothers and me to his job sites. His attention to detail and strong work ethic led me to interior design, where I get to practice both of those things every single day. Additionally, I have always had an interest in art, so anytime I get to incorporate those selections into projects is great!
What is your favorite aspect of working at Office Interiors?
So many things come to mind when answering this question, but my favorite aspect of working at Office Interiors is the relationships that I have made with clients and other partners. While I love the days that I get to do head-down design work, I also enjoy explaining and presenting what I have created to the client and helping them visualize their ideas.
How do you approach planning and implementing new projects?
The beginning of a new project typically starts with a meeting, either with the client or our internal team. This is where I ask all the necessary programming questions to begin space planning and look at the floor plan to decide the best approach. During this meeting, we discuss the budget, timeline, functional needs, aesthetics, etc. Once these constraints have been defined, I can begin product selection and layout.
Can you share a memorable project or accomplishment you have achieved in your role?
My most memorable accomplishment to date was Enviro-Clean, which we installed earlier this year in Grand Rapids, MI. We started by taking the client to the MillerKnoll showroom in Holland, MI where they were able to see our entire furniture offering in one place. The client picked out a few different office settings from the tour that I was able to modify to fit the needs of their new space. The project was such a success that it was shared on a nationwide MillerKnoll call back in July!
Outside of work, what are some hobbies or interests that you enjoy pursuing?
From May to October, I coach Freshman volleyball at St. Joe High School. I played volleyball year-round for about 10 years and decided to return to the court as a coach, which has been very challenging, yet rewarding. In my free time, I enjoy painting watercolor and acrylic. Most of my artwork is proudly displayed in my family’s homes, where they can enjoy it—and I can pretend I'm Picasso. I also love spending time with my adorable niece and nephew, Dottie and Robert.
Are there any interesting facts that you’d like to share about yourself?
Many people hate this, but I love reality TV. I wish I could be best friends with Andy Cohen!
